Summer Treatments - Canton, MA

Now that Summer is in full swing, it’s time to talk about procedures that we should take a vacation from during the warmer months and what procedures we should treat ourselves to.

Laser treatments and deep chemical peels make us more sensitive to the sun and also require us to avoid heat and humidity after treatments. The summertime is a perfect time to take a break from your laser treatments; these include laser hair removal, vascular treatments, and laser treatments for pigment. In fact, it is safer to avoid these treatments during the warm and humid months. There are exceptions to this rule so always talk to your aesthetician.

You don’t have to spend the whole summer without hair removal treatments. Summer is a great time for waxing treatments. Dream Spa Medical uses luxurious Lycon wax and clients have smooth skin for weeks. Waxing will interrupt the hair growth cycle so you will need to wait for your hair to grow back before continuing with your laser hair removal treatments but you’ll have the convenience of being hair-free all summer long.

Additionally, you have many alternatives to chemical peels and laser peels during the summer. We offer homecare treatments to help keep dark spots at bay. Also, our HydraFacial and summer special—the Cool as a Cucumber Facial—are great for keeping your skin hydrated and refreshed if you spent too much time in the sun. You still want to exfoliate your skin in the summer and we have gentle options for that. Mild chemical lifts such as our Signature 4 Layer Facial gently exfoliates with a Vitamin C and Enzyme lift while infusing the skin with hydrating Vitamin C.

Don’t forget, summertime means fun in the sun. Protect your skin with a quality sunscreen and reapply often. Your skin will still tan, you just won’t burn from the UV rays. If you want a more sunkissed glow, we offer the ultimate solution: airbrush spray tanning. We use Aviva Solutions, an organic spray tan line that will give even the palest skin a warming boost of color. Aviva Solutions work with your skin’s natural melanin (the protein that gives your skin color) so that you don’t look orange or too dark.

Summer Spray Tan Tips

Are you looking for a healthy summer glow without the damage associated with sun exposure? Protect your skin while still getting tanned with an airbrush spray tan. Dream Spa Medical uses the all natural Aviva line of spray tan products. Aviva’s tanning solutions offer a wide range of tones and colors to accommodate the fairest of skins to darker, olive skin tones. Because Aviva is all natural, even pregnant women can have a spray tan—but these clients should always check with their doctors first, just to be safe.

The best part, Aviva’s solutions are hypoallergenic and perfect for sensitive skin. While airbrush spray tanning only lasts 5-7 days, there are steps my clients can take to achieve the best results. Before a client comes in to see me, I recommend that clients do the following:

  1. Do not wax, have a laser treatment, or chemical peel immediately before a spray tan. The skin will be too sensitive and the tanning solution, while it is hypoallergenic, may cause irritation on sensitized skin.
  2. Do not tan in the sun or use self-tanner for 7 days before your spray tan. This will result in an unnatural result.
  3. Prep your skin the morning of your spray tan by using a body scrub to remove dead skin. Remember, airbrush spray tanning only changes the melanin (the pigment that reacts to the sun) in the top layers of skin. The more dead skin you remove, you will have a more even and longer lasting tan.
  4. Come to the appointment wearing loose-fitting, dark clothes. Be prepared to not shower for 24 hours.

In the treatment room:

  1. Be honest about how tan you normally get after an hour in the sun. Some clients want a color that is darker than their natural tan. Using a darker shade will result in an unnatural looking tan.
  2. We provide disposable underwear and a hair cap. Some clients prefer to wear a bathing suit and male clients often will wear bathing shorts.
  3. Be honest about any medical conditions. Aviva Spray Tanning Solution is hypoallergenic but if you have a skin condition that causes extreme dryness or uneven skin, your aesthetician needs to know.

At home:

  1. Wait 24 hours before showering. When you do shower, use a gentle and moisturizing cleanser. Do not use exfoliating mesh scrubbers, loofas, or brushes on your skin. Shaving will also exfoliate your skin and shorten the life of your tan.
  2. Avoid products that are designed to exfoliate the skin, such as alpha hydroxy acids, alcohol-based products, scrubs, etc.
  3. The more moisturized you are, the longer your tan will last. Look for moisturizers specifically designed to extend the life of a spray tan.

Two very important things to remember:

  1. If you have a spray tan on your face, your foundation will not match your skin for a week. You can use the tan as your base color and still use blush, bronzer, and translucent powder.
  2. Airbrush spray tanning does not provide sun protection. You will still need to use an SPF to protect your skin from UVA and UVB radiation.

What makes airbrush spray tanning different than tanning in the sun?

The best beauty and anti-aging advice I can give my clients is this: Stay out of the sun and avoid tanning booths, always wear sunscreen--even if you don’t think you’ll be in the sun, and drink plenty of water. My clients tell me that they can do this but miss having a sun-kissed glow during the summer time. Even if you slather yourself with SPF 50 every 4 hours, your skin’s melanin (the pigment produced when certain skin cells are exposed to the sun) will still darken to your natural tan. Still, many clients want an all over tan and are unsure of how to protect their skin while having that summer glow. When my clients have special events—weddings, bridal showers, graduations, family reunions or just want to look tan, they come to me for an airbrush spray tan.

What makes airbrush spray tanning different from tanning in the sun or using a tanning bed? There is no risk of sun damage from UVA or UVB radiation. Also, unlike most spray tan booths or self-tanners/bronzers, my clients get an even, natural-looking tan because I use an air brush gun with Aviva Sunless Spray Tan Solutions (no Oompa Loompa faces!). The airbrush gun allows me to dry the solution before moving on to another area of the body to avoid splotchy patches in hard to reach areas such as behind the knees, insides of the elbows, and the tops of the legs.

Airbrush spray tanning is only temporary and lasts 5-7 days. It does not provide sun protection—however, neither does tanning in the sun or in tanning booths. Dream Spa Medical offers an excellent solution to keeping your skin safe from sun damage while getting a natural, healthy looking tan.
