The fridge is filled with leftovers, and already you're planning the next big menu that you don't really need. The kids have more free time than ever, and somehow their idle life requires more baked goods than you could possibly imagine. The lawn is covered with leaves, and suddenly there are 3-inches of snow that you never could've anticipated.

(To the last surprise, you really need to take care of that. Like skincare, you have remove the dirt and debris before the final application....MUST call the lawn guy!)

As I was saying, tis the season!

Predictably, somewhere in the midst of transitioning from one big celebration to the next, I failed to acknowledge the loads of laundry piling up.  I had finally taken to the task when my husband came looking for his goodnight kiss.  No sooner had he grabbed his reward and turned for a hasty retreat.  From the depth of dirty clothes I shared a sincere, satisfying, self-serving sigh, and as his guilt set in he turned to offer this suggestion: "Just leave my clothes.  I'll fold them tomorrow".

Just to be clear, he did not offer to fold the laundry, he merely suggested that I leave his clothes - judged and selected, dejected and neglected - to be folded at another time.  Now we all have our ways and I respect that.  I recognize that he was offering his particular brand of "love", but beyond the seemingly ridiculous nature of his suggestion, I don't think I am capable of this sort of censure.  I am the CEO, the HBIC (Head Babe/Bitch in Charge), the Boss of this family and I take my business seriously! I embrace the details, I take pride in my contribution, and I know my worth.  Um....that would be priceless!

I roll my eyes constantly and I try to find humor in our differences.  The "all or nothing" mentality is exclusively mine, so I take responsibility for it with the same commitment and enthusiasm that I usually reserve for them.  I mean, in truth, how do I expect them to anticipate my needs when they hardly know what they need!?!?

So, this holiday season I am especially grateful for my family.  Somewhere during my time spent taking care of them, I have come to appreciate the maturity and mindfulness that forces me to take care of myself as well.  Some things are simply more meaningful than a perfectly folded flat-sheet.  During this month of madness, make sure you cater to the most important person in your life.  You!  Indulge in a massage or facial, dinner or drinks, exercise or therapy...whatever makes you happy.

In fact, you can get 4 out of 6 of these treats right here at Dream Spa Medical!   We'd love to spend the time with you and we'd love to hear about what makes you smile.  Share your indulgences with us, or simply share this article with someone who needs a break.

Breathe deep and have a very Happy Holiday!

Melasma - Boston, Canton, MA

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, December 03, 2014

My daughter once spent a comical amount of time and energy trying to wipe away "dirt" from my forehead.  I indulged her with the patience of a Mom who has licked and swiped at her face for years.  This was payback and I let her rub until it hurt.  Then there was the time when my friendly manicurist offered to wax away the "hairs" from my upper lip. I politely declined with the confidence of a licensed laser technician.  Those hairs had been zapped to oblivion years ago!

I knew very well that there was no dirt on my dome, no fuzz to be found, no spray tan traumas, no makeup mishaps.  Nothing but my skin...and what they saw was my life long struggle with Melasma.

Melasma is a brownish-gray facial discoloration that typically appears on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip.  It is most commonly diagnosed in women, and while the condition often makes us feel isolated and alone in our struggle, it affects over 40 million of us worldwide!  These global numbers illustrate that women with an olive or darker skin tone -Hispanic, Asian, Middle-Eastern, Mediterranean, African - have a higher tendency to pigment.

Sun exposure and hormonal changes are believed to be the predominant causes of Melasma, but various chemicals and modalities designed to treat the condition can actually make it worse.

Some women develop Melasma during pregnancy.  This is actually called chloasma, which is a reaction to increased hormones, and may resolve itself naturally when the hormone levels return to normal.  Beyond pigment issues, pregnancy isn't always a picnic, but when compared to a lifetime of dealing with Melasma maintenance and missteps, I consider the Mammas to be the lucky ones!

Despite all the hard-faced facts and the rough reality of Melasma, there is good news: you are not alone!   Now before you pull a muscle rolling your eyes, let me clarify: myself, and the entire team at Dream Spa Medical, are in it with you.  As a woman who has struggled with this, I can only offer sympathy and solidarity.  As a professional working in the skin care industry who has corrected her own concerns, I can offer control...and that's the whole battle when it comes to Melasma!

A proper skin analysis and a customized home care regimen are only a starting point.  Natural and medical grade products, as well as in-office treatments are necessary.  And for the love of all that is pure and pigment free, wipe off the dirt and put on your sunscreen!!

If you liked this article, pass it on, or feel free to share your own experience with Melasma.  We'd love to hear from you and we hope to see you soon.
