5 Skincare Myths That Are Hurting Your Skin

5 Skincare Myths That Are Hurting Your Skin

April 6, 2025

We spoke to expert aesthetician Lindsey at Dream Spa Medical to set the record straight on some of the most common skincare myths she hears from clients every day. She gave us her real and practical tips, rooted in experience.

  1. Myth: You only need sunscreen on sunny days.

Lindsey:
This one comes up all the time. UV rays are present even on cloudy days, and they penetrate windows too. If you’re driving, sitting by a window, or spending time outside at all, you need sunscreen. It’s the single most important product for preventing premature aging and protecting your skin.

  1. Myth: Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer.

Lindsey:
Completely false. In fact, skipping moisturizer can make oily skin worse. When your skin is dehydrated, it produces even more oil to compensate. The key is using a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that balances the skin without clogging pores.

  1. Myth: If your skincare products tingle or burn, they’re working.

Lindsey:
A slight tingle can be normal with active ingredients, but burning or stinging is your skin telling you something’s wrong. It means the product is either too harsh or not suited for your skin. Healthy skin shouldn’t hurt, and irritation can actually damage your barrier.

  1. Myth: Natural products are always better.

Lindsey:
Natural doesn’t always mean safe or effective. There are amazing medical-grade products backed by science that deliver real results. On the other hand, some “natural” ingredients can cause allergic reactions or irritation. I always recommend choosing what’s right for your skin, not just what’s trending.

  1. Myth: You don’t need professional treatment if you use good products at home.

Lindsey:
Home care is essential, but professional treatments like facials, microneedling, or peels go deeper and help you get results faster. Think of it like fitness, your at-home routine is great, but sometimes you need a personal trainer or a more targeted approach. The two work best together.

“Your skin is unique. Instead of chasing trends or falling for online tips, talk to a provider who can help you understand what your skin really needs.” – Lindsey
