Getting your skincare order right can make or break your routine. We sat down with Lindsey Lyons, expert aesthetician at Dream Spa Medical, to walk us through the ideal way to layer your products for better absorption, fewer reactions, and real results.
What’s the biggest mistake people make when layering skincare?
Lindsey:
The biggest mistake is either applying products in the wrong order or using too many actives at once. That can lead to irritation, product buildup, or poor absorption. Your products should work together, not compete with each other.
What’s the correct order to apply skincare?
Lindsey:
It depends on the routine, but the general rule is to go from thinnest to thickest. Start with cleansing, then apply your active treatments, then layer hydration and protection.
Here’s a basic morning routine:
- Cleanser
- Toner or essence (optional)
- Vitamin C or antioxidant serum
- Moisturizer
- Sunscreen
For nighttime:
- Cleanser
- Exfoliant or treatment serum (like retinol or glycolic acid)
- Hydrating serum (like hyaluronic acid)
- Moisturizer
- Spot treatment or oil if needed
Can you mix actives like retinol and vitamin C?
Lindsey:
I usually recommend separating them. Vitamin C is great for morning, while retinol is best at night. Layering too many strong ingredients at once can overwhelm the skin, especially for sensitive types. If you’re ever unsure, ask your provider or simplify your routine until your skin adjusts.
Should everyone use toner?
Lindsey:
Not necessarily. Toners can be helpful, especially if they’re hydrating or calming. But they’re not essential for everyone. I always look at someone’s skin type and goals before recommending one.
How long should you wait between steps?
Lindsey:
Give each layer about 30 to 60 seconds to absorb before applying the next one. You don’t need to wait forever, but letting things sink in a bit helps avoid pilling and makes the products more effective.
Lindsey’s Final Tip
“Start simple and stay consistent. You don’t need a 10-step routine to get great skin. Focus on a few high-quality products applied in the right order, and you’ll start to see real changes.”
