How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin Type

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin Type

April 12, 2025

Choosing the right sunscreen isn’t always easy, especially with so many formulas on the market. To help break it down, we spoke with Lindsey Lyons, one of our expert aestheticians at Dream Spa Medical. She shared her top tips on how to find an SPF that works with your skin, not against it.

  1. What’s the biggest mistake people make when choosing sunscreen?

Lindsey:
Most people don’t pick a formula based on their skin type. They just grab whatever says SPF 50 and go. But oily skin, dry skin, and sensitive skin all need different things. A sunscreen that works for your friend might clog your pores or leave your skin irritated. Customizing your SPF is key.

  1. How should someone with oily or acne-prone skin choose sunscreen?

Lindsey:
Go for a lightweight, oil-free sunscreen labeled as non-comedogenic. Gel or fluid formulas usually work best because they don’t feel heavy and won’t contribute to breakouts. Look for ingredients like zinc oxide or niacinamide, which can actually help calm the skin.

  1. What about dry or mature skin types?

Lindsey:
You want something hydrating. Cream-based sunscreens with added moisturizers or hyaluronic acid are great. Look for formulas that feel nourishing, not chalky. And don’t worry if the SPF number is a bit lower — reapplying is more important than going straight to SPF 100.

  1. What’s your advice for clients with sensitive skin?

Lindsey:
Stick to mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They’re less likely to irritate the skin. Avoid sunscreens with added fragrance or alcohol. I always recommend patch testing a new product before putting it all over your face if your skin is reactive.

  1. Is higher SPF always better?

Lindsey:
Not necessarily. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, and SPF 50 blocks about 98%. The difference isn’t huge. What really matters is applying enough and reapplying every two hours when you’re outside. That’s where most people go wrong.

  1. Do you recommend any professional-grade sunscreens?

Lindsey:
Absolutely. We carry several medical-grade options at Dream Spa Medical that are designed to protect without clogging pores or causing irritation. I always help clients match their sunscreen to their skin type, concerns, and lifestyle.

Lindsey’s Tip

“Sunscreen is the most important step in your routine. It protects your skin from premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and even slows down the breakdown of collagen. Whether you’re oily, dry, or somewhere in between there’s a formula that fits your skin.”
