Skincare During Pregnancy

As you may know, pregnancy is a hormonal roller coaster ride. You live in the highs and lows of your emotions, and nowhere is that change more evident than on your face. You're exhausted, exasperated, exhilarated, and it shows!

Some lucky ladies get that glow...and then there's the rest of us. All that hormonal activity can cause a variety of bumps, blotches and itches, but the most frustrating change can be the development of acne. The problem is compounded by the fact that your most effective go-to products are no longer considered safe now that baby's on board.

The good news is that hormones readjust in the second trimester of pregnancy. However, this is only a reprieve. After giving birth the balance changes again and additional flare-ups should be expected. To that end, I would recommend an anti-inflammatory diet to correct the problem from the inside out. In fact, this should be the first line of defense when treating anyone who suffers from acne.

A proper diet can directly interfere with the formation of acne lesions and can prevent irreversible scarring caused by the inflammation. The key to an anti-inflammatory diet is to prevent the rapid rise in blood sugar. Therefore, when addressing acne inflammation it is just as important to be aware of what foods NOT to eat, as well as what foods help. Many are common sense, like sweets and treats, but you might be surprised to find that even mangos, bananas, corn, potatoes and hard cheeses rapidly convert into sugar when they are digested and are considered pro-inflammatory. In other words, acne inducing.

There are endless food options that taste great and fight acne by easing the inflammation. In this case, an apple a day will (really & truly) keep the doctor away. And while you're at it, try some turkey, salmon, shellfish and tofu. Then dig in to all the antioxidant rich options: almonds, berries, flaxseed, dark leafy greens, beans, seeds, olive oil, soy products and yogurt. Combine this with water, vitamin supplements and a gentler sulphur-based topical and you can actually take your acne for a ride!
