“Hey, PIZZA FACE!!!”
“Hey, PIZZA FACE!!!”
It was the end of a long day in a temp job that I wasn’t thrilled with. I was just out of college and still struggling to find my perfect career. I was temping for a public school system in an administrative office and found myself back at the same school where I attended 7th grade. Oddly, I felt like I was back in the 7th grade all over again.
I’ve struggled with acne since I was in the 6th grade. I was a shy kid and having a face full of oil and pimples didn’t help matters. After a mortifying conversation with my mother, I went to see a dermatologist who put me on an ever-changing rotation of antibiotics, topical medications, and recommended certain cleansers from the drug store. My skin improved ever so slightly but not enough to say that I saw enough improvement to feel better about my skin. I tried every anti-acne product I could find (and afford on my high school/college budget) and even tried products from infomercials that promised free 30 day trials. Some products worked a little bit and others just made my skin worse.
Nothing worked.
Then, the esthetician who I was seeing for brow waxing suggested that I try a facial. Over time, she and I worked on my skin. She told me that just like getting regular dental checkups, we need to have our skin treated by a professional-especially when someone has problem skin. Also, I had to change my skincare routine at home. My esthetician also told me that we tend to get what we pay for when it comes to products. We don’t have to buy the most expensive products on the market but most products from the drugstores don’t really treat and heal acne in the long term. Over time, we found the right products for my skin. It wasn’t easy, finding the right home routine for skin care is like finding the perfect pair of jeans—you have to try a number of options before finding the right pair.
It did take time but my skin cleared up and has stayed clear for years. Most people are surprised when I tell them that I suffered from serious acne. Not only is my skin clear now, the products that I use help reduce the appearance of previous scarring and hyperpigmentation left over from my battle with acne. I do try new products based on the advice of estheticians and my own knowledge of what works and what doesn’t work.
Now, the only time I have to talk about pizza is when I splurge on a Friday night!
